Polokwane to get new 2010 stadium

12 August 2006

The Polokwane municipality in Limpopo has confirmed the building of an R800-million stadium to be used in the 2010 World Cup, the SABC reported on Friday.

The stadium, which would be named the Peter Mokaba Complex, will be built next to the existing Peter Mokaba stadium.

Polokwane mayor Thabo Mokonyane said refurbishing or demolishing the existing stadium would have been too costly for the municipality.

"The first two options of simply upgrading the stadium or demolishing it to make way for the new one would have been too costly," he said."So, there will be two stadiums and a number of other facilities as part of that."

Mokonyane said the 2010 competition gives his municipality an opportunity to build a facility they have always needed "in the shortest possible time". - Sapa
